 An opportunity for practical learning : Science Camps at Velammal NewGen Schools 

When students do science projects in small teams in schools,it helps develop resourcefulness and hones their skills at goal-setting, planning and problem-solving. It also nurtures intellectual curiosity, helping students acquire new ways of asking questions and understanding the world.  

With this in mind ,Science Camps were organised in the Velammal NewGen Schools at Medavakkam,Madipakkam,Sholinganallur,Navalur,Kelambakkam & Adhanur today,Saturday the 31st August 2019.The Chief Academic Officer of Velammal,Mr.Nathan Sambandam inaugurated the camp at Velammal NewGen School Medavakkam and addressed the parents.He spoke about the importance of how Science and life cannot be separated and how there is always a connection between Science and all other subjects.Parents appreciated the way the CAO spoke about ‘simple machines’ or the ‘science behind seasoning’ and one parent exclaimed “the way the CAO spoke shows how Velammal prepares students for life than for exams” 

 To throw light on the exhibits of the Camp,it had surveys,working models and documentaries.All of these were done by the students of grades VI-VIII mostly in teams and few as individual projects.The highlight was that each project had a neatly collated dissertation,a project documentation.The Science teachers & ACOs had spent enough time with the students and guided them on all these.The students spoke confidently on their projects and the questions posed by parents and the jury were answered with ease.

The Science camps  at all the 6 campuses of VNGS at Medavakkam,Madipakkam,Sholinganallur,Navalur,Kelambakkam & Adhanur developed scientific spirit and curiosity in students which in turn forced them to think and creatively find solutions to the challenges on the topic,Energy Conservation.The students enjoyed learning through these Science Camps and felt a sense of belongingness as they made the models with their own hands.

 Mrs.Geetha Seshan,the Head Curriculum of Velammal who was the Chief Guest at Velammal NewGen School,Madipakkam also insisted on how Science Camps of Velammal explore the creative talent of the students and force them to think outside of the box.
