Excitement unplugged...
The excitement was building conspicuously and the students aged 8 to 10 years were busy decking them up,whispering in hushed voices and waiting for their turns. All this was in connection with the Theatre Carnival conducted by Velammal Vidyalaya NewGenSchool,Shollinganallur on 30th August 2019 in the school campus. The students from the 13 sections of grades 3 to 5 participated in this. The parents were invited in 2 slots both in the morning and in the evening. It all started with the Principal,Ms.L.S.Banumathi addressing the parents on drama-based pedagogy in Velammal and the importance of MLV-Making Learning Visible.
The theatre techniques showcased by students were role play, literary tableau, skit, mime, freeze frame/action clip/thought tracking open and close(use 3-5 still images to narrate a story) and character enactment.Today students combined it with the elements of theatre like simple costumes, props , make-up,music and even lighting to make it a vibrant learning festival, the one we had today.
Theatre in classrooms teaches students to connect to themes that we teach and also build up their speaking and listening skills. Incorporating theatre leads to more engaged students. And MLV:Making Learning Visible through theatre display is an authentic assessment as well, as parents realized how the concepts are internalized by students and how the learning has happened. Many of them exclaimed that Velammal teaches students in a novel and interesting way.You may listen to some videos were parents express this.

Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, considers “create” to be the highest order of thinking and theatre in classrooms program in Velammal has scientifically used this to make children create and learn.
