Building a Mathematical Mindset…

The Velammal NewGen schools at Madipakkam & Medavakkam had the Math Camp for the students of classes 6,7 and 8 on 23^rd November 2019.
Velammal Vidyalaya NewGen school,Shollinganallur had it on 3rd December 2019.

The purpose was to build a mathematical mindset through engagement and creative play in Mathematics. The lesson title was Geometrical Shapes and the project allotted was to design a park. The theme of the Math Camp was to embed international dimension and core skills in the classrooms.

The day started with a presentation - Introduction to Math Camp which was followed by a Team Building Activity and the students choose their team leaders and the observers. The students did a Survey / Group discussion on the facilities for a kids park. This was followed by an activity: To design a direction map and to design a rough sketch of kids park. The excitement in the students was evident when they did the next two activities on properties of 2D shapes – triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons & 2 / 3 circle venn diagrams for the classification of 2D shapes.

There were animated discussions when the students were asked to make 3D shapes from 2D shapes , to design the kids park and to calculate area, perimeter and volume of the shapes. The Camp came to a close after each group presented their projects with the time line in a lively and high-spirited manner. They also wrote a 3 point reflection on the Math Camp. The ebullience in the classrooms was contagious.

The camp honed these skills in the students; geometry and computational skills in Math, drawing skills in Art and Design and situational talk and public speaking skills in English.Special thanks are due to Ms.Lalitha Thirunavukkarasu,SME-Subject Matter Expert in Mathematics from Velammal's Academic Council for planning this purposeful and productive camp for the students of VNGS.
