It was a conference with parents led by the student.  The role of the classroom teacher was that of a facilitator in the conference process.  Students led parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and social goals.  The process included the teacher facilitating several conferences at the same time.  The student directed the conversation focused on their work and classroom behavior. Leaders of their own learning- Student led conferences When schools turn their eyes and calendars toward parent-teacher conferences, Velammal New Gen School, Kelambakkam took a look at this growing trend of Student Led conferences or SLC. Revising and replacing the traditional parent-teacher conference, the SLC allowed the young minds of the middle school to develop leadership and organizational skills and take ownership of their learning. Parents were notified that the conference is student led and the educators are there to assist and facilitate when and if required.  It provided students with the ability to have open discussions with their parents about their successes and struggles and put these skills into practice in a collaborative and supportive way. Student-led conference in place of a conventional PTODM…           “ A real good experience for us as parents, happy to see that our children have reflected on their performance ”, said the father of a grade 6 student. During conventional PTODMs, parents ask how their students are doing, and teachers provide grades, behavior reports and the report cards.   Instead, in a SLC- Student-led conference , our students ran the conference, informing their parents about how they were doing in class, what their goals are going forward, and what kind of learners they are.   Being a progressive school, we at Velammal Vidyalaya NewGen school ,Shollinganallur ran the SLC today,19 th October 2019 for grades VI-VIII. Parents were given appointments and each class had a waiting room and an SLC room.
