Student-led conference in place of a conventional PTODM…
“A real good experience for us as parents, happy
to see that our children have reflected on their performance”, said the
father of a grade 6 student. During conventional PTODMs, parents ask how their
students are doing, and teachers provide grades, behavior reports and the
report cards. Instead, in a SLC-
Student-led conference, our students ran the conference, informing their
parents about how they were doing in class, what their goals are going forward,
and what kind of learners they are.
Being a progressive school, we at Velammal
Vidyalaya NewGen school ,Shollinganallur ran the SLC today,19th
October 2019 for grades VI-VIII. Parents were given appointments and each class
had a waiting room and an SLC room. The SLC room had the triad : the student, parent ,teacher and the student did all the talking with the SLC binder laid before
him or her. Some parents were awestruck, when they heard their otherwise
reticent children speaking. All the parents appreciated the efforts of the
school. “Really can’t believe if my son
can speak this much,” exclaimed a parent.
We at Velammal had this
globally acclaimed practice of having a SLC-
Student-led conference, true to the sense of the word NewGen,where students guided the parent-teacher conference
and took ownership of their learning. The role of students was that of
Conference Leaders and the teachers were mere facilitators. It is an
endeavor to empower our students to share the learning experience with their
parents as they have learnt to map their learning goals.
