Project Based Learning (PBL) in the kindergarten classes of VNGS Madipakkam…

PBL or Project Based Learning in kindergarten may sound bit complicated for 2-5 year olds but it was a wonderful learning opportunity for the students, as they were actively engaged in real-world and personally meaningful projects.311 students from the 13 sections of kindergarten participated in the PBL Expo with zeal and enthusiasm at Velammal NewGen school, Madipakkam on Friday,6 December 2019.

Project based learning took place over an extended period of time, for 3 weeks, in contrast to an ordinary project which may only take a day or two. Each class was assigned a PBL topic that was relevant, age appropriate and chosen by the students.

This PBL project was an enquiry based learning. It helped students understand the topics assigned in detail, the topics varying from an  egg, dinosaur, rocket, apple, banana, rainbow, fish, ship, butterfly, plantain, bicycle, mango to apple . It also offered multiple ways for children to participate and demonstrate their knowledge. This PBL Expo also used 21st century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

Project Based Learning happened in three Phases in VNGK Madipakkam

Phase I Planning and Preparation

Selection of Topic – Teachers presented 6 to 8 topics to the class. Based on children’s interest the topic was selected. Children's knowledge about the topic ( What they KNOW ) and their questions (What they want to KNOW) were recorded.

Phase II  Investigations and Representations

The classes were divided into small interest groups. Children were encouraged to find answers to their questions through various ways using technology, hands on activity, videos and discussions. Many activities were conducted to investigate.

Phase III Conclusions and Reflections

The three weeks learning   was exhibited by the children during the PBL Expo in front of their parents who were invited to see this learning showcase.
